Components of Microsoft Excel Window
When Microsoft Excel is started, a window appears on the screen. It has different components A brief description of each component is given below.
Title Bar - It is the top most bar of the Excel Window that contains the name of program (i.e. Microsoft Excel) and the name of workbook. The Title Bar also contains the Control Icon on its left side and three Control buttons on the right side.
Menu Bar - The Menu Bar comes under the Title Bar. The commands that can be used to perform different tasks during creating or editing workbook are grouped together into the Menu Bar.
Standard Toolbar - It contains various shortcut command buttons for opening & saving workbooks, copying and moving information etc. It provides the quick way to access the commonly used commands by clicking the appropriate button with mouse.
Formatting Toolbar - It is under the Standard Toolbar. It contains the formatting command buttons used for formatting the text.
Formula Bar - When a formula is used in a cell, then the calculated result is displayed in the cell. The actual formula is displayed in the Formula Bar. If a formula is not applied in the cell, then the contents of cell are displayed in the formula bar.. Formula Bar is used to edit the contents of cell.
Cell - The intersection of a column and a row is called a Cell. The data is entered into the cells of worksheet.
Active Cell - The currently selected cell where data can be entered or edited is called the Active Cell. When another cell is selected or cell pointer is moved to another cell, it becomes the Active Cell.
Cell Address - It represents the location of cell in the worksheet. For example, the cell located at column number three and row number 6, is represented as C6.
Column Header - A horizontal bar that has headings of columns with labels A, B and so on (It is from A to IV) is called Column Header. It is usually used to select the columns of the worksheet.
Row Header - A vertical bar that has headings of rows with labels 1, 2, 3, and so on (It is from 1 to 65536) is called Row Header. It is usually used to select the rows of the worksheet.
Status Bar - The bar at the bottom of the Microsoft Excel window is the Status Bar. It displays the status of workbook and mode of insertion etc.
Horizontal Scroll Bar - The bar at the bottom border of Excel window is Horizontal Scroll Bar. It is used to scroll the worksheet left and right to see the contents of cells.
Vertical Scroll Bar - The bar at the right border of Excel window is Vertical Scroll Bar. It is used to scroll the worksheet up and down to see the contents of cells.
Sheet Tabs - Each worksheet of workbook has a tab at the bottom of Excel window that is labeled with a proper name. You can easily switch between the worksheets by clicking one of these tabs. When a new worksheet is added, its tab is automatically created labeled with sheet4, sheet5 etc.
