4. Search
The Search option of Start menu is mainly used to search files & folders stored on computer disk etc.
To search for a file or folder
- Click Start Button, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders, a Search Results dialog box will appear.

- In Search for files or folders named, type the file name or folder name you want to find in Containing text.
- To search for files containing specific text, type the text you want to find.
- In Look in, click the drive, folder, or network you want to search.
- To specify additional search criteria, click Search Options, and then click one or more of the following options to narrow your search:
- Select Date to look for files that were created or modified on or between specific dates.
- Select Type to look for files of a specific type, such as a text or WordPad document.
- Select Size to look for files of a specific size.
- Select Advanced Options to specifr additional search criteria.
- Click Search Now.
5. Help
The Help option of Start menu is used to see the help of specific topic of Windows operating system. When this option is selected, a dialog box for help of Windows 2000 is appeared having different search options. You can see the detail of any topic of Windows.
6. Run
The Run option of Start menu is used to run a program or to open a document directly. When Run option is clicked from the Start menu, the Run dialog box appears on the screen. The dialog box is shown in figure below:

In Run dialog box, type the name of program or document in “open” text box and click “Ok” button. Jf you do not know the exact location of the program or document then click the “Browse” button and select the program or document from the specified folder.
7. Shut Down
The Shut Down option of Start menu is used to close the Windows operating system for switching off the computer properly. The user should close all the running application programs before to turn off the computer. If you did not save your work then Windows displays a dialog box for each opened document and asks you whether you want to save your work or not. When the Shut Down option of Start menu is clicked, Shut Down dialog box appeared with a drop down list box as shown in figure below.

The important options of Shut down dialog box are described below:
Shut Down - This option is used to close the Windows and shut down the computer -properly. All the opened programs & documents are also closed from the RAM. This option prepares your computer to be turned off.
Restart - This option is used to close the Windows and then to restart the computer once again. All the opened programs & documents are also closed from the RAM. This option is normally selected if a new hardware or software is installed. The Windows saves any system settings that have been changed before to restart the computer.
Log Off - This option is used to disconnect the computer from the network and then prepares the computer to connect to network by another user. This option terminates only the current session and closes all the running programs.
