The Control Panel of Windows

The Control Panel is a special folder that contains the tools (system software) used to configure the hardware and software. For example, you can customize the mouse, keyboard, printer etc. and also set the appearance of desktop using Color Schemes, Screen Savers etc. The new software can be installed as well as already existing software can be uninstalled.

The Control Panel window contains icons of various devices or utility programs. The required icon is selected and opened for changing its properties. Once you change the setting, these are stored. The Windows handles the devices according to their settings. After changing the settings of any device you have to restart the computer.

To open the Control Panel, follows these steps.

1. Click Start button to open Start menu.
2. Choose Control Panel from the setting menu. The Control Panel window opens with various icons.

The most important icons of Control Panel window and their description are given below.

Keyboard - used to change settings of keyboard.

Mouse - used to change settings of mouse. For example, pointer shape, the speed of mouse pointer, the action of left and right buttons can be changed etc.

Users and Passwords - used to set and change the password.

Printers - used to install new printer and change settings of printers.

Modem - used to install modem and change its settings.

Date / Time - used to change the current date and time.

Add/Remove Programs - used to install or uninstall programs.

Add/Remove Hardware - used to install or uninstall drivers of the devices attached to your computer.

Display - used to set the appearance of Desktop.

Regional settings - used to set the format of number, currency, date & time etc.

Multimedia - used to change the multimedia hardware settings.

System - used to display the system information like installed devices and also to make changing in these devices.
