Copying and Moving Files and Folders
The most commonly used operations on files & folders are copying and moving. The difference between copying operation and moving operation is:
- In copying operation, selected file or folder is copied from one location to another. In this operation, selected file or folder remains in its original location and a duplicate copy is created at new location.
- In moving operation, selected file or folder is moved or shifted from one location to another. In this operation, selected file or folder is removed from its original location and is shifted to new location.
Files & Folders are copied or moved from one location to another by using one of the five methods.
- Using menu commands.
- Using standard toolbar icons
- Using popup menu commands.
- Using keyboard shortcuts.
- Using Drag & Drop.
1. Copying Files & Folders
To copy files or folders follow these steps.
- Select the files or folders.
- Copy the selected files or folders to clipboard by selecting one of the following commands.
- Click Copy command button on the toolbar.
OR Select Copy command from the popup menu. OR Select Copy command from the Edit Drop down menu. OR From the keyboard press Ctrl + C
- Select the disk or folder where selected files or folders are to be copied and then select one of the following commands.
- Click Paste command button on the toolbar.
OR Select Paste command from the popup menu. OR Select Paste command from the Edit Drop down menu. OR From the keyboard press Ctrl + V
Note: It must be noted that files or folders can be copied using drag & drop method. It is a shortcut method to copy files and folders. Follow these steps to copy files or folders from one location to destination.
- Select files or folders that are to be copied.
- Drag the files or folders by holding the Ctrl key, to the specific disk drive or folder and release the mouse button.
2. Moving Files & Folders
To move or shift files or folders follow these steps.
- Select the files or folders that are to be shifted to another location.
- Move the selected files or folders to clipboard by selecting one of the following commands.
- Click Cut command button on the toolbar.
OR Select Cut command from the popup menu. OR Select Cut command from the Edit Drop down menu. OR From the keyboard press Ctrl + X
- Select the disk or folder where selected files or folders are to be shifted and then select one of the following commands.
- Click Paste command button on the toolbar.
OR Select Paste command from the popup menu. OR Select Paste command from the Edit Drop down menu. OR From the keyboard press Ctrl + V
Note: Like copying operation, files or folders can be moved using drag & drop method. Follow these steps to move files or folders from one location to destination.
- Select files or folders that are to be moved.
- Drag the files or folders (without holding the Ctrl key) to the specific disk drive or folder and release the mouse button.
