My Documents Icon
My Documents is also a special folder on the desktop. It is the standard folder of Windows 2000 and is automatically created when Windows 2000 is installed. When you save a document, graphic, or other file using an application program such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel or Paint, the file is automatically saved in My Documents unless you choose a different location. You can directly open the document from “My Documents” folder by opening the folder and then double clicking the document you want to open.
My Documents folder is default folder to save and to open documents. You can change the default folder i.e. “My Document” with another folder.
To change default folder, follow these steps:
- Right-click My Documents, a popup menu will open.
- Click Properties, a dialog box will appear.
- In Target, select folder name where you want to save files.
Recycle Bin
The Recycle Bin is a special folder of Windows on the hard disk and has an icon on desktop. It contains files and folders that are deleted from the hard disk. Any files and folders you delete from the hard disk are transferred to the Recycle Bin. These files or folders can be restored from the Recycle Bin to their original location if required for use. It must be noted that the files or folders that are deleted from floppy disk are not placed in the Recycle Bin.
The Recycle Bin is very useful for recovering the files or folders that are accidentally deleted. The Recycle Bin holds the files and folders that are deleted by the following methods or commands.
- Deleted files or folders by pressing Del key on keyboard.
- Dragged file or folder to the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop.
- Deleted files or folders by choosing Delete command from the Popup menu or Edit menu.
When Delete command is applied, the Windows displays a dialog box for confirmation before to delete the file, or folder. The user confirms the deletion by clicking the Yes command button of dialog box.
Deleting File or Folder
To delete a file or folder follow these steps.
- Select the file or folder by clicking it.
- Press Del key or use Delete command from the Edit menu. A dialog box appears for confirmation.
- Click Yes command button to confirm deletion. The file, or folder will be transferred to the Recycle Bin folder.
The files or folders stored in the Recycle Bin folder can also be deleted by following the above steps. The files or folders deleted from the Recycle Bin are permanently deleted from the hard disk and cannot be restored. To delete all files or folders in the Recycle Bin, click Empty Recycle Bin button or choose Empty Recycle Bin command from File menu of Recycle Bin opened window.
Restoring File or Folder
To restore file or folder from Recycle Bin, follow these steps.
- Open the Recycle Bin folder by double clicking it.
- Select the file or folder that is to be restored or un-deleted.
- Choose Restore command of File menu or click Restore button. The selected item goes back to its original location.
