3. Energy Saving Feature
The energy saving feature saves the electric power supplied to the computer. The monitor of the computer consumes more electric power than other components of the computer. The energy saving feature turns off the monitor (or brings the computer in stand by mode) automatically if the computer is not used for a predetermined period of time.
To apply the energy saving feature, follow these steps.
- Right click the mouse button on an empty space on the desktop area, a popup menu will appear.
- Choose the Properties from the menu, Display Properties dialog box will appear.
- Click Screen Saver tab and then click Power button, Power Options Properties page will appear.
- Select a power scheme from the available options.
- Click OK button to apply the selected scheme.
Changing Interface Colors and Fonts
Windows also allows the user to change the color, size and font of various components of Windows interface. For example, you can change the desktop color, icon font and sizes, scroll bar sizes etc.
Right click the mouse button on an empty space on the desktop area, a popup menu will appear.
- Choose the Properties from the menu, Display Properties dialog box will appear. .
- Click Appearance Tab in the Display Properties dialog box.
- The Scheme dropdown list box contains various predefined options. Select a scheme from the Scheme dropdown list box.
- Select the font size and color etc. in the given options of the page if required.
- Click OK or Apply button to apply the desktop appearance settings.

Changing Standard Icons
The icons that are created automatically on the desktop when Windows is installed are known as standard icons. These are also referred to as System Folders. The standard icons are My Computer, Network Neighborhood, My Documents and Recycle Bin. You can change the graphical image of any icon according to your choice.
To change a standard icon, follow these steps.
- Right click the mouse button on an empty space on the desktop area, a popup menu will appear.
- Choose the Properties from the menu, Display Properties dialog box will appear.
- Click Effects tab, Effects page will appear as shown in figure.
- Select the standard icon you want to change.
- Click the Change Icon button, a dialog box will appear that contains your current or selected icon and other available graphical icons.
- Choose an icon you want to use in place of selected standard icon.
- Click the OK button to apply the selection.
Setting Resolution and Monitor’s Colors
You can change the resolution and number of color supported by the monitor. To change the resolution and colors supported by monitor, follow these steps.
- Right click the mouse button on an empty space on the desktop area, a popup menu will appear.
- Choose the Properties from the menu, Display Properties dialog box will appear.
- Click Settings tab.
- Drag the slider under the Screen area to specify the resolution.
- Choose the number of colors from the Colors dropdown list.
