Introduction to Word Processing

In the past, people used typewriters to prepare documents. The typewriter prints the pressed character directly on the paper. Once the document is created on the paper, it cannot be edited again. The typewriter provides no facility of formatting the documents etc. The images are manually inserted in the document.

The process to prepare and to print documents by using the computer and computer programs is called Word Processing. The computer programs that are used for this purpose are called the Word Processing Software or Packages. The Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, Word Star are examples of Word Processing Packages.

Word Processing Software is used to create letters, memos and various types of documents. The Word Processing Software has the following important features:

  • Creating new documents with different formatting.
  • Save the document on disk for future use.
  • Preview the document on the monitor before to get a hardcopy.
  • Open the existing document for editing.
  • Set the margins of document and line spacing.
  • Copying, moving, selecting, deleting, inserting etc. operations of text in the document.
  • Underline text, bold face text, setting size of text etc.
  • Images can be inserted into the document.
  • Cut or copy the selected text from’ the document and paste it anywhere in the same or another document.
